London felt the energy of Tamil Nadu's economic ambitions today as Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presided over the signing of four significant investment agreements that promise to bring both capital and jobs back to the southern state. The deals, inked during Vijay's first official overseas trip, signal Tamil Nadu's aggressive push to position itself as a global investment destination.

Key facts

  • Total investment: ₹12,300 crore across four agreements
  • Expected job creation: Approximately 10,000 positions
  • Sectors: Manufacturing, technology, renewable energy
  • Location: Multiple regions across Tamil Nadu

Major manufacturing commitment

The largest agreement came from Samvardhana Motherson International Limited and its European and UK-based joint ventures, committing approximately ₹11,000 crore. This substantial investment will create employment for around 7,000 people across design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and logistics facilities. Barry Painter, global head of marketing and communications for the Samvardhana Motherson Group, exchanged the MoU with Deepak Jacob, managing director of Guidance Tamil Nadu.

Global capability centers expand

Ernst & Young's UK headquarters committed to establishing a Global Capability Centre in Tamil Nadu through a ₹1,000 crore investment that will generate 2,000 high-value jobs. The GCC will be located in the newly announced 'GCC corridor' on Mount-Poonamallee Road in Chennai, adding to the state's growing technology infrastructure.

Sweden's Sigma Technology Group also expanded its commitment through its Indian entity, Zriya Solutions, signing an MoU to grow its GCCs in Tiruchi and Chennai. The expansion will create 600 high-value jobs in embedded systems, electrification, and industrial digitalization.

Renewable energy and manufacturing growth

Wilson Power Solutions signed for the next phase of growth in Tamil Nadu's electrical and electronic equipment manufacturing sector, involving a ₹300 crore investment in Tiruvallur district that will create 400 new jobs. The signing was attended by company officials and Kumaran Periasamy, High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom.

Later meetings with Ashok Leyland and Finolex Industries leadership reinforced existing commitments, including a previously signed ₹2,500-crore MoU from August's Vettri Tamil Nadu Investors' Conference. The groups expressed particular interest in expanding investments in renewable energy, especially wind power, and strengthening Tamil Nadu's role as an export hub for commercial vehicles.
