Campus Clash at JNTU Hyderabad Sparks Protests and Police Cases

Tensions flared at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad (JNTUH) late Thursday night, turning a cultural celebration into a scene of chaos and confrontation. What began as Teej festivities escalated into violent clashes between student groups, leaving several injured and prompting a tense standoff at the university gates.

From Celebration to Confrontation

The trouble started around 9 p.m. when a third-year mechanical engineering student reportedly made objectionable remarks about a female student. Her friends confronted him, and what should have been a verbal exchange quickly turned physical. Police say the argument spiraled out of control as tempers flared.

Night of Violence

The situation dramatically worsened after midnight. Students from Gautami and Manjeera hostels armed themselves with sticks and began pelting stones at each other. The clashes continued into the early hours of Friday, creating a dangerous environment on campus. The sounds of shouting and breaking glass replaced what should have been festive music.

Police Intervention and Fallout

KPHB police rushed to the campus after receiving an emergency Dial-112 call. Their intervention finally brought the volatile situation under control. Meanwhile, angry students gathered at the university's main gate, demanding action against those involved in the violence.

Police registered three separate cases—one based on the female student's complaint, a counter-case from the other group, and a suo motu case for allegedly obstructing police duties during the protest. The 16 students taken into custody were served notices and released.

JNTUH officials said they have constituted an internal review committee to examine the incident and take disciplinary action against students found responsible.
