In an effort to bridge generations through the enduring power of literature, the Karnataka Sahitya Academy has released a new book designed to impart core human values to the state's youth. Titled Kannada Sahityadalli Manaviya Moulyagalu (Human Values in Kannada Literature), the volume serves as a curated gateway to the moral and ethical wisdom embedded in the works of Karnataka's literary masters.

The academy recognized a growing disconnect. Many young people simply aren't encountering the profound works of these foundational authors, whether from a lack of interest or their absence from standard curricula. This book acts as an invitation. By selecting powerful excerpts centered on themes like equality, tolerance, and empathy, the compilers hope to spark a deeper curiosity.

One poignant example is a line from the 9th-century Kavirajamarga, the earliest available work of Kannada literature. The passage, attributed to court poet Srivijaya, defines true wealth not as gold, but as the ability to tolerate and respect the views and religions of others—a message that resonates profoundly today.

More Than Just a Book: A Living Program

The initiative extends far beyond placing a book on a shelf. The academy has trained 40 subject experts who will fan out across villages and taluks in the Koppal district. They are set to conduct a series of lectures bringing the text's themes to life for students.

“When we try to teach values through poems, prose and plays, it will kindle curiosity among children. And they might pick one of the books written by these authors and read,” said L.N. Mukundraj, president of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy.

This hands-on approach aims to create a dialogue. Teachers, too, can receive training from these resource persons, embedding these lessons deeper into the educational fabric. The success of this pilot in Koppal could pave the way for a statewide rollout, ensuring these timeless values find a new audience across Karnataka.
