HYDERABAD — What looks today like an inevitable revolution was actually years in the making. That's how former Reserve Bank of India Governor D. Subbarao sees the stunning rise of UPI, India's groundbreaking digital payments system.

Key facts

  • UPI celebrated its 10th anniversary this year
  • Book 'Cashless Nation: How UPI Changed Everything' released September 12, 2026
  • Authored by Santanu Paul and B. Sambamurthy
  • Event hosted by IIIT Hyderabad

More Than Just Payments

Speaking at the release of a new book chronicling UPI's journey, Subbarao emphasized that this isn't merely another payment product. It represents something far more profound—an entirely new ecosystem built on open, interoperable public infrastructure.

"UPI has transformed financial inclusion and enabled unprecedented private innovation," he noted during Saturday's event. The system has managed to do what many thought impossible: bring digital payments to every corner of Indian society.

The Architects Behind the Revolution

The book's authors, Santanu Paul and B. Sambamurthy, enjoyed what IIIT Hyderabad called "a ring-side view" of India's payment transformation. Their deep involvement with NPCI, IDRBT, and numerous financial sector committees provided unique insight into how this digital marvel came together.

"UPI is a technology that has made the world sit up and look at India as a global leader in payment technology," said IIIT Hyderabad Director Sandeep Shukla, congratulating the authors on their work.

A Decade of Digital Dominance

This year marks ten years since UPI first launched, and its impact continues to reverberate globally. The system has not only changed how Indians pay for goods and services but has positioned the country as an unexpected innovator in financial technology.

The release event saw participation from notable figures including Dr. Reddy's Laboratories co-chairman G.V. Prasad and IIT Hyderabad founding director U.B. Desai, all celebrating what has become one of India's most successful digital exports.
