Gurugram’s streets turned into rivers on Saturday afternoon as a sudden, heavy downpour brought the bustling city to a standstill. In just one hour, 36 mm of rain pounded the region, overwhelming drainage systems and leaving key junctions submerged.

Commuter Chaos and Rising Risks

Traffic slowed to a crawl along the Delhi-Jaipur highway, with vehicles inching forward from Sarhaul Border to Rajiv Chowk and Subhash Chowk. For two-wheelers and three-wheelers, navigating waterlogged stretches became a dangerous game—potholes hidden beneath the water raised the risk of accidents, forcing drivers to proceed with extreme caution.

One resident noted that since it was a weekend, those commuting home from work later may experience considerable delays due to traffic congestion.

Authorities Step In

The Gurugram Traffic Police quickly deployed personnel at major intersections and waterlogged spots to divert traffic and ease snarls. An advisory urged motorists heading to Delhi to take a U-turn at IFFCO Chowk and use the Aya Nagar border instead. Those bound for the airport were advised to take the Dwarka Expressway.

Meanwhile, teams from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the district administration worked to drain water from affected areas using suction pumps.

More Rain Ahead

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned that intermittent rainfall is likely to continue in Gurugram and nearby areas over the next 24 to 48 hours, due to an active monsoon trough and a low-pressure system. If heavy rain persists, waterlogging in low-lying areas could worsen significantly.

“Avoid waterlogged roads, underpasses, and low-lying areas. Stay away from trees, electricity poles, and overhead power lines. Do not attempt to cross waterlogged roads,” the district advisory read.

Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, directed all concerned departments and emergency response agencies to remain alert and take necessary precautions.
