In a landmark effort to understand and manage its water resources, Karnataka has completed a sweeping census that pinpoints nearly 1.4 million groundwater sources—wells and borewells—used solely for agriculture across the state. The survey, which wrapped up field work in August 2026, also cataloged 38,960 lakes and water bodies under minor irrigation, covering command areas up to 2,000 hectares.

What the numbers reveal

The seventh Minor Irrigation Census and the second Census of Water Bodies, funded by the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, used 2023-24 as its reference year. It covered 30,671 villages, 300 urban local bodies, and 7,128 urban wards, offering a detailed snapshot of water infrastructure. Beyond groundwater, the census identified 77,573 surface water schemes, including lift irrigation projects.

Officials see data as a tool for change

For state leaders, this isn’t just data—it’s a roadmap. Minor Irrigation and Science and Technology Minister Ajay Singh emphasized the potential for “scientific planning” in irrigation and conservation. In a press note on Sunday, he stressed the urgency of acting on these findings, particularly in drought-affected regions.

“The data must be effectively used to prioritise water security interventions in drought-affected areas, rejuvenation of lakes, groundwater recharge, construction of check dams, and tank filling schemes.”

His words carry weight. Earlier this year, a groundwater assessment report showed promising shifts: extraction rates dipped, and recharge capabilities improved. But with nearly 1.4 million wells tapping aquifers, the pressure remains.
