Hyderabad residents clutching empty cylinders formed queues outside LPG agencies this week, a visible sign of the scramble to meet a now-extended deadline. The government's push for biometric authentication of cooking gas connections just got a one-week reprieve, shifting the cutoff from August 31 to September 7.
Key facts
- New e-KYC deadline: September 7, 2026
- Total domestic LPG users: 1.26 crore
- Completed e-KYC: 86% of users
- Software updates rolled out to all three oil marketing companies
The Software Signal
A quiet software update for gas distributors might reveal more than any official statement. Agencies can now "indent non-eKYC stocks," as Telangana LPG Distributors Association president Jagan Mohan Reddy confirmed. This technical patch, distributed to all three oil marketing companies, serves as a clear signal: the system is preparing for potential action against unverified connections.
Reddy observed that the update, alongside a newly enabled customer blocking feature, shows the government's seriousness about ensuring "domestic refills reach only the intended users."
The Deadline Extension
As the original August 31 deadline loomed, Indian Oil Corporation sent a communication to distributors extending the cutoff to September 7. A senior OMC official clarified that the process remains ongoing—consumers can complete verification after the new deadline too.
The catch? Those who delay might face differential pricing. "In the event of a differential pricing coming into force they will, however, not be able to draw the refill at domestic rate," the official explained. Once authenticated, domestic pricing resumes.
The Compliance Landscape
With 86% of India's 1.26 crore domestic LPG users already completing their e-KYC, the majority have adapted to the new requirement. The official suggested that many holding out likely have "multiple connections which is not permitted," indicating the verification drive serves dual purposes: security and regulation.
For now, distributors watch their updated systems while consumers enjoy a brief window to avoid potential complications. The software is ready; the question remains what instructions will follow.
