Chennai Students Shine in Eye Health Quiz as Doctors Warn of Screen Time Dangers

The buzz of competition mixed with urgent health messages as Chennai’s Rajan Eye Care Hospital hosted its seventh annual ‘For Your Eyes Only’ quiz. Held at the Nungambakkam facility during National Eye Donation Fortnight, the event drew sharp young minds—and delivered sobering warnings about the state of children’s vision in the digital age.

A Test of Knowledge and Awareness

More than 200 youngsters first faced an online preliminary round, testing their understanding of eye health, optic anatomy, corneal transplantation, and the crucial importance of eye donation. From this pool, 25 advanced to the semifinals, and ultimately six finalists took the stage under the guidance of quizmasters Arvind Rajeev and Mahesh Ramgopal of XQuizIt.

When the final scores were tallied, Dev Arvind from PSBB Nungambakkam emerged victorious. School principal S. Vasanthi and Rotary Club of Madras T. Nagar president Poornima Karthik were on hand to applaud both the winners and the hospital's seven-year commitment to the event.

Doctors Sound the Alarm

Beyond the competition, a pressing health message took center stage. Chairman and Medical Director of RECH, Mohan Rajan, spoke with clear concern about a growing crisis: childhood myopia. He pointed directly at prolonged mobile phone use as a key culprit, warning that smaller screens are inflicting severe long-term damage on young eyes.

The Power of a Pledge

Alongside the warnings about screen time, the event amplified the life-changing cause of eye donation. Sujatha Mohan, Director of the Rotary Rajan Eye Bank, made a compelling case for public pledges. She noted that when celebrities step forward to donate their eyes, it creates a powerful ripple effect, inspiring others and dramatically advancing the cause of restoring sight to those in need.
