Dr. Anju Angel Alex, Medical Officer in charge of the TB Unit at Ernakulam General Hospital, emphasized the urgency of addressing gaps in X-ray availability by month’s end.

“We will provide a nutrient kit to those detected with Tuberculosis during the campaign by tapping into Corporate Social Responsibility funds,” said Mayor V.K. Minimol.

Goals and Outreach

For Ernakulam to earn the TB Mukt (TB-Free) status, it must test 30 out of every 1,000 people, maintain a positivity rate below 0.1%, and achieve a 90% cure success rate. The campaign also includes preventive therapy for high-risk individuals without symptoms—a 12-week regimen to shield them from future infection.

Residents wary of government screening can seek free tests and treatment at private hospitals enrolled in the System for TB Elimination in Private Sector (STEPS) program, ensuring privacy and accessibility.

With 19 Urban Primary Health Centres coordinating efforts, Kochi’s initiative mirrors earlier successes in areas like Kalamassery, already declared TB-free. The drive underscores a growing recognition that nutrition and proactive care are critical in the fight against TB.
