Tensions surrounding the redrawing of parliamentary constituency boundaries escalated in Southern India as Chief Minister Vijay convened a high-level meeting with Tamil Nadu lawmakers to address the federal delimitation exercise.

Demand for Freeze on 543 Parliamentary Seats

During the meeting, participating members of Parliament voiced strong opposition to the proposed Delimitation Bill, arguing that redrawing boundaries based strictly on recent population metrics could disproportionately disadvantage states that have successfully implemented population control measures. The lawmakers formally recommended maintaining a freeze on the total strength of the Lok Sabha at the current count of 543 seats.

Political Divide as DMK and AIADMK Boycott Session

Despite the critical nature of the discussions concerning Tamil Nadu's representation in New Delhi, the meeting exposed political fault lines within the state. Prominent opposition and ruling coalition parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), chose to boycott Chief Minister Vijay's invitation.

Out of the 57 total MPs representing Tamil Nadu in Parliament, exactly 21 members attended the session convened by the Chief Minister. Those in attendance joined in rejecting the current framework of the Delimitation Bill.

State Resolution Against Delimitation Planned

Following the proceedings and consultation with attending leaders, Tamil Nadu is preparing to move a formal resolution in the state assembly opposing the proposed delimitation process. The move reflects growing concerns among southern political leaders about potential reductions in parliamentary weight relative to higher-population northern states.
