For years, athletes in Ranipet and Tirupattur districts have trained on borrowed grounds—school playgrounds without proper tracks, hostels, or even basic amenities. That reality is now shifting dramatically as two new district sports complexes, representing a combined investment of ₹30 crore, near completion. Over 80% of the facilities are already standing, signaling a new era for local sports.

Until now, district-level sports events were held on playgrounds at educational institutions—functional but far from ideal. "Most playgrounds lack a dedicated area for training and civic amenities for sportspersons and visitors," officials noted. The new complexes change that entirely, with dedicated spaces for athletics, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, and even an open-air theater in Tirupattur for ceremonies and coaching sessions.

More Than Just Playing Fields

What sets these projects apart is their focus on holistic support for athletes, especially those from rural areas. Separate hostels for boys and girls, changing rooms, administrative blocks, and modern gym equipment address longstanding gaps. B. Mukesh, a student, put it plainly: "Lack of hostels, modern sports equipment and basic amenities remains a key challenge for sportspersons... The new sports complex with hostels will be of great help."

Final Touches Underway

PWD officials confirm that remaining work includes lighting, strengthening the athletic track, installing CCTV cameras, and finishing compound walls. Ranipet Collector N. Priya Ravichandran has personally inspected progress, underscoring the project's importance. With rainwater harvesting, storm drains, and parking already in place, these complexes are designed not just for competition but for lasting community use.

"The new sports complex with hostels will be of great help for sportspersons," said B. Mukesh, a student.

For Tirupattur and Ranipet, the finish line is in sight. By early 2027, athletes who once made do with limited resources will have facilities that match their ambitions.
