Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Kozhikode on Sunday, fresh from the BRICS summit in New Delhi, for a significant meeting with prominent Indian Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar. The encounter, held at the Markaz Central Campus, blended diplomacy with personal rapport, highlighting both shared goals and acknowledged differences.

A Meeting of Minds and Divergences

The leaders delved into socio-cultural exchanges and prospects for peace talks in conflict regions. Yet the meeting carried a subtle tension—just a day earlier, Anwar had publicly distanced himself from some of Kanthapuram's views, particularly regarding women's roles. "I did not necessarily agree with all of Kanthapuram's views," Anwar told media in New Delhi, specifically referencing the cleric's remark that "women should remain confined within their homes." He praised Kanthapuram as a great teacher but made clear Malaysia's commitment to gender equality.

Honors and Spiritual Exchange

Amid the dialogue, Anwar was honored with the first Excellence Award from the Sheikh Abubacker Foundation, presented by Kanthapuram himself. The day also included a special prayer gathering and a visit to the Madavoor C.M. Valiyullah Makham, a revered spiritual site in south India. This mirrored Anwar's previous visit in 2022, underscoring a continuing relationship.

Background and Bilateral Hopes

The connection between these leaders isn't new. The Malaysian government conferred its highest honor for Islamic scholars, the Hijra Award, on Kanthapuram in 2023. Sunni leaders expressed optimism that Anwar's visit would boost bilateral cooperation in trade, tourism, and education. Tight security in Kozhikode underscored the visit's importance, with traffic regulated to ease the VVIP convoy's movement.
