Hyderabad’s iconic Durgam Cheruvu may finally see lasting relief from urban runoff. In a coordinated push to clean up the freshwater body, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have agreed to design a permanent blueprint to stop untreated sewage from discharging into the lake.

Directed by HMWS&SB Joint Managing Director Mayank Mittal, the inspection team tracked the wastewater trails that routinely taint the water body.
During the walk-through, engineers flagged four critical conduits pumping sewage straight toward the lake basin:
- Interception and diversion structures serving Madhapur
- Drainage flows originating from Silent Valley
- The stormwater box nala at Vitthal Rao Nagar
- The drainage alignment coming in from the TGIIC layout
At each junction, officials analyzed volume patterns and debated immediate diversion options alongside decentralized treatment feasibility.
Urban Sprawl Outpaces Local Plant Capacity
Durgam Cheruvu already hosts a dedicated Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), but rapid real estate development across its surrounding neighborhoods has left the facility overwhelmed. While the STP operates at 100% capacity day in and day out, domestic wastewater generation from neighboring high-rises and residential colonies continues to climb.
The imbalance worsens dramatically during wet spells. When monsoon downpours arrive, stormwater mixes with overflowing sewer lines, overwhelming interception points and pushing untreated runoff directly into the lake basin.
Crafting a Comprehensive Technical Fix
Rather than relying on stopgap diversions, authorities intend to build a data-driven infrastructure plan. Technical teams will conduct detailed topography and hydrology evaluations of the surrounding micro-catchments to trace every contour of the drainage basin.
The forthcoming master plan will combine expanded treatment facilities, upgraded diversion conduits, and strategic pipeline rerouting to ensure the historic lake remains protected as the surrounding urban footprint expands.
