Twin Toddlers Die After Ingesting Pesticide in Kerala Home

In a heart-wrenching accident that has left a Kerala community reeling, twin one-year-old boys died Friday night after accidentally ingesting poison at their family home in Idukki district. The children, identified as Ihan and Rehan, were playing near a shelf where pesticide was stored when the tragedy unfolded.

A Parent's Worst Nightmare

The evening began like any other in the Ozuvathadam household. The twins were playing near a shelf where their parents, Afsal and Sandra, stored pesticide commonly used for cardamom plantations. Then the power went out.

In the darkness, something went terribly wrong. The pesticide had apparently leaked onto the floor, and the curious toddlers came into contact with the toxic substance. Their parents later discovered traces of the chemical on the children's hands and feet.

Desperate Race Against Time

After bathing the children immediately, hope quickly turned to horror when around 7:30 p.m., both boys began showing symptoms of poisoning. The family and local community sprang into action, rushing the twins to a private hospital in Erumpupalam.

As their condition deteriorated rapidly, medical staff transferred them to Adimaly Taluk Hospital. One child died within minutes of arrival. The other was rushed to another private hospital in a final, desperate attempt to save his life—but he too succumbed to the poison.

"The children were playing near a shelf in the house, where the pesticide bottle was stored. The pesticide had apparently leaked onto the floor," said District Police Chief K. V. Naseem.

Investigation Underway

Police have registered a case of unnatural death but emphasize that no foul play is suspected. A forensic team has gathered evidence from the scene, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.

Preliminary findings point to a tragic accident involving a pesticide that many agricultural families in the cardamom-rich region keep on hand. The community now mourns two young lives lost in a moment of childhood curiosity turned catastrophic.
