Kochi's Water Crisis Nears Relief with New 50-Lakh-Litre Tank

Kochi residents may finally see relief from chronic water shortages as the Kerala Water Authority greenlights a major new storage project. The utility will construct a 50-lakh-litre tank at Thammanam, replacing capacity lost when part of the existing structure collapsed last year.

Addressing a Critical Shortage

The Thammanam tank failure hit Kochi hard, cutting off supply to neighborhoods across the city. That ruptured compartment held 68 lakh litres—a significant chunk of the city's water storage. Initially, KWA considered replacing it with a 35-lakh-litre tank, but officials quickly realized that wouldn't be enough.

"There were discussions that the proposed 35 lakh litres tank would not be enough, which is why we have decided on the 50 lakh litre tank," said a KWA source.

Practical Constraints and Solutions

Space limitations at the site prevented engineers from planning anything larger. The clever solution: split the capacity between a ground-level reservoir and an overhead service reservoir, each holding 25 lakh litres. Together, they'll provide that crucial 50-lakh-litre buffer.

The project's inclusion in the ADB's refurbishment program means it bypasses typical funding hurdles. That same program also covers renovations at water treatment plants in Aluva and Maradu, signaling a broader push to shore up Kochi's water infrastructure.

Cautious Optimism

Local leaders welcome the move but temper expectations. Ernakulam MLA T.J. Vinod acknowledges the tank will bring relief, though he notes the tendering process hasn't even begun. For residents who've endured months of unreliable supply, the nine-month timeline feels both promising and painfully distant.

The new tank will rise on KWA's existing land in Thammanam, a tangible step toward ending the water anxiety that has shadowed this city for too long.
