In a heartwarming move that blends tradition with tangible support, Tamil Nadu’s ambitious 'Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam' is springing to life. Joyalukkas Group and Kalyan Jewellers, the two firms entrusted with the tender, have begun dispatching the first batches of one-gram gold rings destined for the tiny fingers of newborns across the state.

Key facts

  • Scheme provides one-gram gold rings to newborns in government hospitals
  • Budget allocation: ₹560 crore in Revised Budget Estimates
  • Joyalukkas and Kalyan Jewellers share work orders in 70:30 ratio
  • Rings packed in specially designed pouches mentioning the initiative

A Gesture of Welcome and Worth

Under this initiative, every baby born in a Tamil Nadu government hospital will receive a gold ring—a symbolic gift that celebrates new life and offers a small financial start for families. The state government allocated ₹560 crore to make this promise real, turning policy into precious metal.

Logistics in Motion

Joyalukkas, which secured 70% of the order, is manufacturing and supplying 89,955 rings in the first lot alone. The company has set up dedicated packaging hubs in Chennai and Coimbatore to ensure quality and security. Each ring is carefully checked, finished, and slipped into a custom pouch before shipment.

“Shipping has commenced. The supply and dispatch process is being carried out in coordination with the State government and in accordance with the distribution and delivery mechanisms prescribed under the scheme,” said Joy Alukkas, chairman and managing director of Joyalukkas Group.

Kalyan Jewellers, handling the remaining 30%, is supplying 38,550 rings. Managing director T.S. Kalyanaraman emphasized their structured approach: “Dispatches and deliveries are being managed in batches ahead of schedule to cover all 107 locations.”

Making It Work

Joyalukkas won the tender by bidding just ₹0.01 for making charges, hallmarking, insurance, and transportation—excluding the cost of gold. The government covers the gold at market rates, while the jewellers handle production and logistics. Despite gold price fluctuations, both companies express confidence in their operational control and real-time tracking to keep deliveries smooth and timely.
