Hope at Last? Kerala Promises Order Soon for 1,600 Teachers Stuck in Limbo

For roughly 1,600 teachers in Kerala, a wait that has dragged on for years may finally be nearing its end. General Education Minister N. Samsudheen has said that an order will be issued soon to address the concerns of these teachers, whose appointment approval has been on hold in the wake of a dispute over reservation for differently-abled people.

The announcement, made on a day dedicated to honouring teachers, offered a rare note of hope to those stuck in procedural limbo — approved for appointment, yet unable to take up their posts.

Years of limbo

The appointments have been stuck for the past few years, caught in a dispute linked to reservation for differently-abled people. For the teachers affected, the delay has meant careers paused and uncertainty stretched thin — a quiet crisis playing out far from the spotlight.

The Minister's plan

Mr. Samsudheen was speaking after opening the State-level Teachers' Day celebration in Kozhikode on Saturday (September 5). He said 4% of posts would be clearly set apart for differently-abled people, ensuring the appointment process is completed in a transparent manner.

To make that work on the ground, a special roster will be prepared to include all the appointments in schools — a structural fix aimed at bringing order to a system tangled by years of uncertainty.

Clearing the legal hurdles

The government has also moved on the legal front. A curative plea has been filed in the Supreme Court to clear the hurdles related to the K-TET, the teacher eligibility test central to recruitment in the state.

There was one more concession tucked into the Minister's speech: the criteria for the creation of posts of physical education teachers would be relaxed, a step that could widen opportunities in school staffing.

None of this erases the lost years. But for 1,600 teachers watching and waiting, the promise of an order — soon — is the firmest signal they have had in a long time.
